I’d say still tell him/her, as long as you guys both understand that it won’t ruin your friendship, or make it awkward (and emphasize it).  Make sure you talk about that; otherwise if they find out from someone else, it’ll become really awkward, and a million times harder to talk about.  And you never want that to happen.
